Today is Valentines Day.
What is love?
To love is to be vulnerable.
God has love for you.
1. God Loves You!
God loved you before there was a human race. God chooses you.
Does God the Father love the Son?
John 17:25-26 NLT
[25] "O righteous Father, the world doesn't know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. [26] I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them."
Nothing will ever change that:
Romans 8:38-39 NLT
[38] And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. [39] No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Knowing all this..
2. We should love God.
1 John 4:19
[19] We love because He loved us first.
Matthew 22:36-40 NLT
[36] "Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?" [37] Jesus replied, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' [38] This is the first and greatest commandment. [39] A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' [40] The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments."
Instead of trying to focus on keeping rules...focus on loving God.
If you love God, as you should, everything else will fall into place.
Matthew 22:37 NLT
[37] Jesus replied, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.'
We are to love God with every part of our being.
The heart can be very dark.
Jeremiah 17:9 NLT
[9] "The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
Matthew 15:19 NLT
[19] For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
Don't focus on our heart, focus our heart on God.
We are also to love the Lord with all of our soul.
3. Knowing that God loves me, and I love Him, I am to love others.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT
[4] Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud [5] or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. [6] It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. [7] Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
1 Corinthians 13 is a portrait of Christ.
Love is not a feeling, it's an action.
If you don't think others deserve to be loved, can you also ask the same question about you? We all have God's love, yet we don't deserve it.
4. Focus on doing your part in the marriage is what you need to be doing.
Ephesians 5:25 NLT
[25] For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her
Men are just as emotional as women, we just express it differently.
When's the last time you praised your wife and expressed your love to her?
If you really love your wife, don't just say it...do it!
5. If you love your wife, you will not be harsh with her.
6. If you love your wife, you will always believe the best, not the worst about her.
A good marriage is made up of two good forgivers.
7. If you really love your wife you will make it through the rough patches together.
Despite who we are, God still loves us.
If you love your spouse then you know what it's like to live with a difficult person and love them anyway because we are all difficult people.
God loves us.
