Getting Started Chapter 2
Matthew 16:18 (NLT)
Now I say to you that you are
Peter (which means 'rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all
the powers of hell will not conquer.
Colossians 1:18 (NLT)
Christ is also the head of the
church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from
the dead. So he is first in everything.
Ephesians 1:22-23 (NLT)
God has put all things under the
authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of
the church. [23] And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by
Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.
Ephesians 5:29-30 (NLT)
No one hates his own body but
feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. [30] And we are
members of his body.
Acts 2:1-4 (NLT)
On the day of Pentecost all the
believers were meeting together in one place. [2] Suddenly, there was a sound
from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house
where they were sitting. [3] Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire
appeared and settled on each of them. [4] And everyone present was filled with
the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave
them this ability.
Acts 2:42-47 (NLT)
All the believers devoted
themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in
meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer. [43] A deep sense of awe came
over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.
[44] And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they
had. [45] They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with
those in need. [46] They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in
homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and
generosity- [47] all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all
the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were
being saved.
Ephesians 4:11-16 (NLT)
Now these are the gifts Christ
gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the
pastors and teachers. [12] Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do
his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. [13] This will continue
until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we
will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of
Christ. [14] Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won't be
tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced
when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. [15]
Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more
like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. [16] He makes the whole
body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps
the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of
love.
Points passages:
1. We come to church to be
equipped.
2. We come to church to be built
up and to build up other.
3. We come for unity and
fellowship with brethren.
4. We come to church to serve
God.
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT)
Let us think of ways to motivate
one another to acts of love and good works. [25] And let us not neglect our
meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now
that the day of his return is drawing near.
1 Corinthians 12:24-26 (NLT)
while the more honorable parts do
not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra
honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. [25] This makes
for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.
[26] If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is
honored, all the parts are glad.
Romans 12:4-8 (NLT)
Just as our bodies have many
parts and each part has a special function, [5] so it is with Christ's body. We
are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. [6] In his grace,
God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has
given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has
given you. [7] If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a
teacher, teach well. [8] If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging.
If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take
the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to
others, do it gladly.
2 Timothy 2:15 (NLT)
Work hard so you can present
yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not
need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.
